Flying Farangs Raise Money for Tsunami Relief

BANGKOK, Thailand

Scott Murray (O.H.E) thought it would be a good idea to let everyone know what a great job the Flying Farangs did in raising money for the Thai Red Cross Tsunami relief. In addition to these monies, contributions were also made by other organizations back in North America directly to the Red Cross. For example the Greater Toronto Minor Hockey Association donated there Saturday gate admissions to the Red Cross in our name. They charge parents and friends to watch their Minor Hockey league games. The amount was roughly $25,000 CDN.

Meanwhile back here in Thailand, we deserve a big pat on the back for raising the following amounts.

Admission Donations plus Players Contribution 238,773 Baht
Donation to the Canadian Embassy Tsunami Game Account 188,402 Baht
NHL Contribution $32,000 US (Conversion to THB – 2005) 1,280,000 Baht

Total Raised 1,707,175 Baht

I would like to thank Bank of Nova Scotia for handling all the money issues, the Canadian Embassy, and the Canadian Ambassador Deni Comeau, for arranging for the bank accounts to be set up. Not easy to do in Thailand on short notice.

And of course thanks to everyone for playing and helping make this an outstanding success. An exciting observation is that we actually raised 238, 773 baht at the door. I remember sitting with Scotty, Whitty, and Rob. Rob turned to me and said “What if nobody turns up at the game”! Keep in mind this game was arranged over only two weeks with a fixed deadline; the World Trade Rink shut down immediately after our game.

Again thanks to everyone for helping.

If you are wondering what O.H.E. stands for, it is similar to an OBE (Order of the British Empire), it is the Order of the Hockey Empire.

Greg Jones
